Allergy and Asthma Toxins in Baby Bath Products

Is you baby being exposed to Asthma and Allergy toxins such as 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde? The answer is yes from a study conducted by "Campaign For Safe Cosmetics" in March of 2009. I would take a second look at your "Sesame Street" character brands and the "Johnson & Johnson's Baby Shampoo. This is pretty serious for our children's health and must be remedied quickly or else the long term complications will arise out of their use on our children.

These chemicals, formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane are known animal carcinogens and probable human carcinogens, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Individuals with Asthma, Allergies and The Chemically Injured can be affected by these products too. Formaldehyde is also known to cause skin rashes in allergic children. We have one client who's child is highly allergic to multiple baby shampoos.

According to a study conducted by "Campaign For Safe Cosmetics", additional products have also been identified for the presence of 1,4-Dioxane. The products are the following: Hello Kitty Bubble Bath, Johnson's Baby Wash, Huggies Baby Wash and Scooby-Doo Bubble Bath. The tests also found the carcinogen in Clairol Herbal Essences shampoo, Olay Complete Body Wash and many other personal care products.

If you are concerned about your children developing Asthma, Allergies or becoming Chemically Injured, we recommend that you limit your children's exposure to these products until they can be further evaluated and tested more for long term effects. We are also concerned about the chemicals that can cause contact dermatitis in children in these products.

What this means to you as a parent: The FDA does not require contaminants to be listed on the labels or require companies to test for safety issues or contaminants before they go on the market. As a result of this investigation, Safe Homes is sure that the FDA will make some major changes in the way they do business. In the meantime, as Parents, take this matter into your own hands and try to limit your child's exposure to organic or Health Food Store products only. This should help your children and protect from these toxins in Baby Bath Products. It will also send a message to these companies which will require them to change their formulation and marketing approach.

In conclusion, children's products should be evaluated for the presence of both formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane in bath products for children. In the average home, some children can be exposed on a daily basis using the named products by "Campaign For Safe Cosmetics". We do not know the long term implications of this exposure to formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane in bath products for children but I would not let my children use such products.
